But was that really his intent?
We all know about the sneaky bait and switch that he uses to go from Step 2 to Step 3…..The higher power that can be anything in Step Two that will help return you to sanity, is to be transformed into “A God of your understanding” in Step three and that is still pretty vague and open for interpretation isn’t it?
No, what BW really wants is for you to make AA your ”higher power”. From page 27 of the Big Book; “You can, if you wish, make AA itself your “higher power”. Then on page 29 “we had to look for our lost faith. It was in AA that we rediscovered it. And so can you.
Thanks but no thanks Bill.
Now let’s talk a little more about intent. Even the biographies written by BW idolizers like Susan Cheever’s “My name is Bill”, can’t cover the fact that he was basically a lazy, narcissistic, manically depressed dude who was looking for an easy payday.
He managed to finagle all of the royalties for the Big Book (even though there were quite a few people who helped write it) and when he died, left his wife Lois with quite a nice nest egg and income stream. Hell even his house up in Westchester, NY was finagled from a fan.
So, for every desperate person looking for answers that he converted to the religion of AA, he could pretty much count on one of those hideous Blue Books winding up in their hands; The AA bible, the unquestioned word of the Messiah, BW.
Go ahead and reread those insane 12 steps and every time you see the word God or Him, take it out and replace it with AA. It works masterfully. He knew what he was doing.
Of course the crème de la crème, is the 12th step that doesn’t mention Him or God; “Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principals in all our affairs”.
Translation------Recruit, Recruit, Recruit…….More money in the hat and more importantly……..More ugly Blue Books!!!!!! It ain’t about God folks, it’s about money in Bill’s pocket and feeding his insatiably large ego.
Peace out, Rolf
