That's why if you are in the throes of addiction, you should seek to recover and live a full life instead of just being satisfied to maintain your sobriety as a constantly recovering addict.
I carried the "Recovered vs Recovering" debate on another site and I had to share one observation there and my response. Some people just don't want to get it!
XYZ said, "I'm sober and I no longer have a compulsion to drink alcohol, rather it is recovering or recovered is irrelevent to me. Because I'm human, I will always have the potential for improvement in many areas of my life. If I am satisfied with my life today then I'm satisified".
Well you shouldn't be satisfied with just recovering! There is a huge difference whether you consider yourself "recovered" or "recovering"! A lot of people leave the halls of AA because they don't want to be in a "process" of recovering "One day at a time" for the rest of their lives. They want to put that sad chapter behind them and embrace the possibilities of the future without reliving the past by listening to drunkalogs, identifying themselves as alcoholics every time they speak and confessing their sins with 4 step dirty laundry lists and 5th step confessions. They simply have more productive things to do in this life. If wasting hours of your life doing this kind of thing over and over again works for you, then go for it. That's one of the reasons why AA is so screwed up...Their highest and loftiest goal is to become a happily "recovering" alcoholic and an unquestioning member of their little congregation for the REST OF YOUR LIFE otherwise, acccording to them, you will end up in jail, insane or dead! Hey but no pressure, leave if you want. Thanks, I did and I am neither incarcerated, institutionalized or 6 feet under- Not yet anyway :-)
Look, my fiance is a two time cancer survivor but she doesn't spend her life whining about the horrors of
having had to live through that ordeal. It's a part of her PAST that she'd really rather not revisit if you know what I mean. Ah, but you might say that she is simply in remission and that is could come back at any time and therefore she isn't recovered. Well she doesn't have it now so she isn't about to spend her days needlessly worrying about it. Here's another huge difference between a disease like cancer and the supposed disease of alcoholism. If cancer cells at some point are reintroduced to her body, she has no choice in the matter. That's why the best she can attain is the status of being in a state of remission. A recovered alcoholic, on the other hand, has the CHOICE of never pouring booze down their throat again and therefore can remain RECOVERED. Recovered or recovering? I think there's a big difference and I choose the former!
