Now, going back to our determinist friends of the last post, “dreaming the future”, in their opinion, is just a waste of time because you have no say in it.
They’re probably great fans of the song, Que Sera, Sera immortalized by Doris Day. In it she sings “Que sera, sera whatever will be, will be, the future's not ours to see, Que sera, sera what, will be, will be.”
Just like in the last post, I will take this in 2 somewhat conflicting directions here.
1-You absolutely shouldn’t obsess over the future whether that be 5 minutes, 5 days or 5 years. Why? Because when you do that, you stress yourself out and cause yourself all kinds of unnecessary anxiety.
Sometimes, however, you do just have let things go how they’re going to go and be OK with it. you know, the old accepting things you can’t or shouldn’t change thing.
2-That being said, I really am more of an advocate of the idea that we shape our future realities. No, obviously we can’t control the outcomes of A LOT of things but to just throw your hands up and say why bother?; well
then “why bother”.
That is exactly the mindset that so many people who become alcohol/drug dependent fall into. It fosters a feeling of hopelessness!!!
When I finally put the bottle down and started to try and figure out the whys, I also incorporated a “can and will do attitude”. One in which I didn’t simply accept that my life was all misery and woe without any hope of a better tomorrow.
I dared to “dream”of a better future. But, and here’s the big but; without me being an active participant of creating that future; then it was only a PIPE dream.
So dream of a good future and then do the work to make it more than just a dream but a reality. All of our dreams don’t come true but if you don’t have any, then you seal your fate.
