with a word that has many “definitions” and categories as the universe has planets.
That word is Disease.
If you look up the word on www.wikipedia.org for example, you will find the following words and terms are either looked at as synonyms of or closely related to that of disease. Ready?
Included are, illness, medical condition, morbidity, syndrome, disorder, …..
Then you have sub-divisions of diseases such as; infectious disease, contagious disease, foodborne illness, communicable disease, airborne disease, lifestyle disease, organic disease, acute disease, chronic disease,
flare-up, refractory disease, progressive disease, localized disease, systemic disease, disseminated disease, ……
Then disorders are further broken down to; mental, physical, genetic, emotional, behavioral, and
Is it any wonder then that pretty much any kind of dysfunction whatsoever could
somehow be categorized as a “disease”?
However, if you take what is called the Medical Definition of Disease as found on www.merriam-webster.com you will see it defined as follows;
“an impairment of the normal state of the living animal or plant body or one of its parts that interrupts or modifies the performance of the vital functions, is typically manifested by distinguishing signs and symptoms, and is a response to environmental factors (as malnutrition, industrial hazards, or climate), to specific infective agents (as worms, bacteria, or viruses), to inherent defects of the organism (as genetic anomalies), or to combinations of these factors.”
Now, can you in any which way shape or manner squeeze someone’s propensity to drink to excess without being able to control it into any of the above criteria? I would have to say, NO. Therefore, drinking alcoholically is NOT a disease.
