You guys all know that I don't subscribe to the "disease" theory of addiction and I've written about it extensively. Simply put, diseases don't force people to pour inanimate objects down their throats or to inject liquids into their bodies. Diseases happen to you, they aren't self-administered by choice.
Having "alcoholism" classified as a disease opened up the floodgates to the "recovery" industry to the tune of billions of health insurance dollars. The inpatient rehab industry which is completely dominated by the 12 Step methodology simply couldn't exist without it.
It also furthers the "powerlessness" dogma on which the rest of that philosophy/religion is based. It's no coincidence that people with close ties to both AA and the AMA pushed so hard for that classification.
But really, the most damaging aspect of this label is what it does to the individual who supposedly has this "disease"
1-It fosters a position of both helplessness and hopelessness which the 12 Step pundits are very quick to offer a religious solution to. After all, if you have an incurable genetic disease, then only a daily reprieve from your "higher power" can offer you any peace!
2-It's a built in EXCUSE for one's behavior. "I can't help it dear, I have a DISEASE!"
3-It labels people as "addicts" for life. People who haven't had a drink in 30 years go around calling themselves alcoholics. This is insane! In order to be an "alcoholic", it would only stand to reason that you must drink alcoholically, right? Crazy.
3-It promotes the position that recovery has to be an on-going lifelong proposition. Under this theory, nobody is ever "recovered" from this wretched "disease" which is why there is not exit plan from the 12 Step Religion.
It's all just one big fat lie and it's spreading into so many other areas of our society. There are 12 Step Groups popping up for just about any kind of irresponsible behavior. Drugs/alcohol, sex, over eating, shopping, gambling and the latest and most insane to date................being wealthy!!!! Yup, you can now try to excuse your bratty shitty behavior and sense of entitlement on the disease of "Affluenza" .....
Look, being dependent on booze/drugs, sex, etc....means that there is something else going on and that is indeed a problem and very unfortunate but it's NOT a disease.
It's a response, a behavior chosen to deal with some other issues.
So called "addiction" can be a bitch but using the excuse that you have no choice just doesn't cut it. The evidence simply doesn't support that assertion.
You have "The Freedom to Recover" by learning to make good choices, take responsibility for your actions and to learn better coping skills for the stresses that are inherent to the human condition.
Your are neither Diseased nor Powerless.
Have a great weekend all!
PS, I'm getting married this weekend so it may be a quiet here for a bit.
